What is the e- ELP?

The electronic European Language Portfolio, the e-ELP, is a document based on the guidelines of the Council of Europe specified in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and intended to be used for pedagogical and informative purposes:

    - It is pedagogical because it should help you plan your learning, visualize your progress and discern which methodology suits you best, thus potentiating your autonomy as a language learner and motivating you to continue learning languages throughout your life.

    - It is informative, because thanks to the language passport and the dossier, you can demonstrate your knowledge of languages and provide clear and comprehensible information on your level of competence, learning profile and use of languages anywhere in Europe.

Through this website http://www.oapee.es/e-pel/  you may also create and manage your e-ELP for the language you select. This tool allows you to access and keep your Portfolio updated from anywhere in the world. This will help you to develop critical awareness and plan your learning more easily.

e-ELP is divided into the same three parts as the European Language Portfolio: Language Biography, Dossier and Language Passport. In the Biography and Passport students can record their experiences regarding the learning of foreign languages. In the dossier students can upload "tasks" done by them in the foreign language.

El Portfolio Europeo de las Lenguas en formato electrónico (e-PEL) es un documento basado en las directrices del Consejo de Europa explicitadas en el Marco Común Europeo de Referencia para las Lenguas con una doble finalidad, pedagógica e informativa.
    - Pedagógica en tanto que le debe ayudar a planificar su aprendizaje, a visualizar sus progresos, a discernir qué tipo de metodología se le adapta y, de esta manera, a potenciar su autonomía como aprendiz de lenguas y a motivarle a que continúe con el aprendizaje de estas a lo largo de su vida.

The first half of the day is spent studying in a small group of other  international guests perfecting their Spanish. After class, both groups join together for lunch and the second half of the day begins at 16:30. The afternoon is comprised of various workshops and cultural activities. The activities range from wine tasting to salsa dancing to hiking—something for everyone. The activities will be led in English and offers you the opportunity to share your language and culture while learning about another.

The course takes place in the Palacio de Avellaneda, a stunning palace built in 1530 in the small town of Peñaranda de Duero. The palace itself has been superbly maintained and while still offering its medieval charm, it is fully equipped with modern amenities like WiFi Internet and comfortable double accommodation. It is situated in the heart of Castile and Leon and offers an inspiring and distinct setting for learning, as well as relaxing. You will spend two afternoons exploring nearby areas. All meals, accommodation, and activities are organized for you and included in the price of the course of 490€.

FUNNY TASK FOR ANY FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHER: MAD LIBS

How you ever heard about MAD LIBS? Mad Libs es una mezcla entre actividad léxica y juego muy popular entre los niños norteamericanos. Aconsejo a todo profesor de lenguas extranjeras que compre uno de estos libros ya que aunque son todos en inglés se pueden traducir al idioma que se enseñe y la finalidad de este juego es hacer reír a la vez que se integra vocabulario, lectura y expresión oral. Digo "hacer reír" porque los alumnos escriben palabras aleatorias (según su categoría gramatical o campo semántico) para luego semi-componer ("semi" porque el profesor entrega a los alumnos el texto ya casi acabado) un texto que describe o cuenta algo. Un ejemplo divertido es componer un texto titulado Mi novio/a ideal donde los alumnos rellenan el texto (sin ver el texto previamente) con adjetivos, colores, verbos, etc y el resultado son descripciones casi siempre cómicas como por ejemplo: Mi novio ideal tiene el pelo verde  (previamente  sin ver el texto los alumnos ya han seleccionado sus adjetivos, colores...) y los ojos amarillos (color) y físicamente se parece a un burro (animal) porque tiene la boca sucia (adjetivo) y los dientes grandes (adjetivo). Lo que más me gusta de mi novio es que es feo (adjetivo) y muy vago (adjetivo). Y así sucesivamente. Los alumnos leen en voz alta sus textos. Esta actividad funciona muy bien con estudiantes con edades comprendidas entre 9 y 13 años.

Le coin des Assistants d'espagnol

JEANETTE, ¿POR QUÉ TE VAS?
Sí, a pesar de que Jeanette no es española sino inglesa, todos los franceses se emocionan cuando oyen en la discoteca la conocida canción ¿Por qué te vas? de Jeanette. Cuando trabajé de auxiliar de conversación en Lyon, a petición de los alumnos, escuchamos en clase esta canción que también es muy conocida en Francia. Y como nunca me niego a realizar actividades que realmente interesen a los alumnos os invito a realizar alguna actividad con esta canción a quienes trabajéis con estudiantes franceses, porque todavía hoy se escuha esta canción en las boîtes de nuit.

Fomentar la expresión oral a través del juego "TABÚ"

La actividad que más éxito tiene siempre es el conocido juego TABÚ o cualquier otro juego similar como TIMES UP. Son juegos que se pueden realizar en cualquer idioma y todos los alumnos siempre participan, no importa su nivel de idioma ya que la finalidad de este juego es que los alumnos aprendan estrategias (como dice Dell Hymes "los profes hemos de enseñar también la competencia estratégica") para compensar su falta de vocabulario. Una buena idea es que el profesorado escriba en trozos de papel el vocabulario de cada tema (en cada papel una palabra) y luego pone todos los papeles en una bolsa (un estuche vacío es perfecto). Los alumnos se sientan en círculo y el profesor les divide en dos grupos. La forma más fácil y más eficaz para que los alumnos no hagan trampas es dividirlos de forma que un alumno nunca va con nadie que está sentado a su lado. Siempre se sigue el orden del círculo por lo que todos los alumnos participan y hablan en otro idioma. El juego consiste en explicar las palabras y cuando otro compañero acierta una palabra el alumn@ que está "descrbiendo/explicando" sigue sacando papeles hasta que pasa un minuto. Cuando se acierta la palabra el alumno se guarda el papel (cuando se han acabado los papeles se hace recuento de papeles y cada papel es un punto). El alumno que está "describiendo" tiene la opción de cambiar de papel todas las veces que quiera, pero ha de volver a meter en la bolsa todos los papeles que su grupo no ha acertado. Esta actividad siempre ha gustado muchísimo a todos mis estudiantes e incluso les he visto jugar en el recreo. Es muy motivador que suene el timbre y los alumnos prefieran acabar la ronda o desempatar en vez de salir fuera de clase.

Material didáctico para profes español y AUXILIARES DE CONVERSACIÓN

El año pasado tuve la suerte de participar en el programa europeo "auxiliares de conversación". Para quienes no estén familiarizados con este término, se trata de una beca que otorga el MEC gracias a la cual estudiantes del último curso de una licenciatura relacionada con lenguas (traducción, filologías...) y estudiantes recién licenciados pueden trabajar durante un curso escolar como "auxiliares de conversación española" en colegios e institutos de países de la Unión Europea. En otras palabras, que si quieres vivir un año en el extranjero, cobrando alrededor de 800 euros al mes y trabajando como profesor@ de español entre 12 y 14 horas semanales (hay mucho tiempo libre para buscar otro trabajo) esta beca es la mejor opción.

Yo tuve la suerte de impartir clases en un buen instituo de Lyon (Francia) y trabajé tanto en primaria como en secundaria y bachillerato. En este blog quiero comentar algunas actividades que puse en práctica con mis estudiantes y resultaron muy divertidas y educativas, sobre todo comentaré clases que mis propios alumnos votaron como "las mejores". Así pues, invitó a tod@s los auxiliares de conversación a compartir aquí consejos, anécdotas y material didáctico que resultó un éxito.

How to teach English to 3-4 years old children?

Believe it or not, I used to teach English to 3-4 years old children and I would have never imagined how difficult it is to teach a foreign language to children that cannot neither READ neither WRITE. If you start teaching English to so young children you will soon realize that there is not enough material online to work with students that cannot even read or write in their mother tongue. I realized the best way to teach these little students is through images, because they cannot read but they can start associating ideas/images/concepts with sounds (teachers should focus more on pronunciation).

 My favourite game with my young pupils was a game created by my imagination so I have called it "Rainbow". It is a simple and funny game. The teacher takes several markers and each one has to be a different colour and then the teacher puts on the floor the different markers.Then the teacher yells a colour, such as "yellow" so the students start running and the first one that takes the pronunced coulour, yellow in this example, is the winner. Children love dynamic games where they can run and move and this game is perfect for this. Therefore, this game uses the Total Physical Response Methodology. If you want to be more familiar with how this teaching methodology works watch the video called "Total Phisical Response". However, remember that this methodology is old (nowadays there are more innovative methodologies) and that there is not any "perfect" methodology. Actually, the methodology will vary depending on our students characteristics(age group, motivation, etc). Nevertheless this methodolgy is quite succesful for so young children because it is based on the way children learn their mother tongue.
Once they have learned the colours the same activity can be done with other vocabulary and using pictures. You can also play the well-known memory game with the same pictures that you can use for this game. Attached you will see more vocabulary and its pictures. With the body parts vocabulary you can play "Simon says..." (when I play this game I called it "Bego says", because who is this Simon?) which is the perfect definition of what a Total Phisical Response game is. I hope you use my material and...enjoy it!
